What is "Excess"?

In New Zealand car rental, "excess" refers to the maximum amount you could be liable to pay if the rental vehicle is damaged or stolen. This is the portion of any claim that you're responsible for before insurance coverage applies.

An "excess reduction" option lowers this maximum liability amount. For example, if you choose a reduced excess option, you'll pay less out of pocket if an incident occurs (subject to terms and conditions). This gives you greater financial protection and peace of mind during your trip.

Think of it as choosing your level of financial risk: standard excess offers basic protection, while reduced or zero excess options provide additional security for a daily fee. Whether you're exploring Christchurch or touring the South Island, choosing the right protection level helps you enjoy your journey with confidence.

How It Works

  1. 1

    Choose your option during booking

When you book your vehicle, you'll see the available excess reduction options. Select the level of protection that suits your needs and budget.

  2. 2

Bond or hold is placed on your card

Depending on your booking and the option you choose, a bond or hold will be placed on your credit card. This amount is reserved but not charged unless an incident occurs.

  3. 3

Hold is released after your hire

If no incidents occur during your rental period, the hold is released after you return the vehicle. Most banks release holds within a few business days, though timing can vary by bank.

  4. 4

If damage occurs, we assess and charge

If damage occurs, we assess the situation and charge only the applicable amount up to your chosen excess level (subject to terms and conditions). With zero excess, you pay nothing for covered incidents.

Frequently Asked Questions

Have more questions? Visit our FAQ page for additional information.

Is insurance included?

Yes, standard insurance is included with every rental. This provides basic third-party and collision coverage. You can choose to add excess reduction options during booking for additional protection.

What does excess reduction change?

Excess reduction lowers the maximum amount you could be liable to pay if the vehicle is damaged or stolen. The standard option has a higher excess, while reduced excess and zero excess options lower or eliminate this liability (subject to terms and conditions).

Is the bond/hold refunded?

Yes, if no incidents occur during your rental period, the bond or hold placed on your credit card is released after the hire ends. Most banks release holds within a few business days, though timing can vary by bank.

Can I add excess reduction after booking?

Excess reduction options should be selected during the booking process. If you need to add or change your selection after booking, please contact us as soon as possible before your rental begins.

Does it cover tyres and windscreen?

Coverage varies by option. The Zero Excess option includes windscreen repairs or replacement (stone chips and cracks), tyre damage (punctures, cuts, blowouts), and cosmetic wheel damage. Standard and Reduced Excess options typically exclude these items. See the comparison table for details.

What happens if I have a single-vehicle incident?

Coverage depends on your chosen excess reduction option and the circumstances of the incident. All options cover accidental damage subject to terms and conditions. However, incidents resulting from prohibited activities (such as driving on prohibited roads) may not be covered. See our Terms and Conditions for full details.

Who decides fault?

Fault is determined based on the circumstances of the incident and in accordance with our Terms and Conditions. We assess each situation fairly and transparently. If you have concerns about an assessment, please contact us to discuss.

What if I'm on a gravel road?

Driving on certain prohibited roads or areas may void coverage. Please refer to our Terms and Conditions for specific details about where you can and cannot drive. If you're planning to travel on gravel roads or remote areas, we recommend choosing a higher protection level and confirming coverage details with us before your trip.

Does excess reduction cover interior damage?

Interior damage from misuse is typically excluded from all excess reduction options. This includes damage from smoking, spills, stains, or other misuse. Please treat the vehicle with care and respect.

What if I use the wrong fuel?

Using incorrect fuel (e.g., putting diesel in a petrol vehicle or vice versa) is typically excluded from coverage and may result in significant charges. Always check the fuel type before refuelling.
